Phenyx Pro Professional Wireless Microphone Systems

To help you make the most suitable choice, we will now detail the core technical elements of wireless microphone systems, including transmitter type, sound quality, frequency band, frequency selection, and circuitry design, guiding you on how these technical features influence system performance and, ultimately, your selection of the most appropriate wireless microphone system.

Technical Elements of Wireless Microphone Systems

Transmitter Type – Handheld / Bodypack / Gooseneck

The core components of a wireless microphone system are the transmitter and receiver. The transmitter converts sound signals into wireless signals and transmits them, while the receiver picks up these signals and converts them back into audio output. One of the most important considerations when selecting a wireless microphone system is the type of transmitter.

  • Handheld Transmitters: The most common type of wireless transmitter, widely used on stages and at public events. Users hold the microphone and bring it close to their mouth for amplification, making it a go-to choice for speeches, hosting, and live performances.
Phenyx Pro Handheld microphone
  • Bodypack Transmitters: Often used with lavalier and headsets microphones, bodypack transmitters offer a compact and discreet solution for hands-free use, providing flexibility for performers, speakers, or presenters who need to move freely without holding a microphone.
Phenyx Pro Bodypack microphone
  • Gooseneck Transmitters: These are perfect for stationary setups where adjustable microphone positioning is important, such as podiums or conference tables. They provide clear and stable sound while allowing the user to easily adjust the microphone’s position.

Phenyx Pro offer a range of transmitters to meet different needs, with our systems supporting handheld, bodypack, and gooseneck microphones. It's worth noting that while the PTAU-2 series currently does not include a bodypack transmitter, we are excited to announce that we will soon be offering a bodypack transmitter for this series, providing even more flexibility for users.

Sound Quality – Analog vs Digital Wireless Microphones

When selecting a wireless microphone system, sound quality is often the top priority. Analog systems use companding to fit audio signals within the available frequency range, which can introduce some loss in quality. However, premium analog models minimize this effect, delivering warm and natural sound. Digital systems, on the other hand, transmit high-resolution signals without compression, preserving the full dynamic range for cleaner and more detailed audio.

At Phenyx Pro, we offer both analog and digital wireless systems. Our PDP series utilizes digital technology for stellar sound, while our other series, though based on analog technology, are meticulously engineered to deliver exceptional audio quality. Despite the difference in technology, both our analog and digital microphones have earned the approval of many satisfied users.

Frequency Band – VHF vs UHF vs 2.4GHz vs 5.8GHz

The frequency band choice for wireless microphones directly impacts the stability of the signal, coverage range, and resistance to interference. Different frequency bands are suitable for different scenarios, and choosing the right frequency band can ensure the stability and efficiency of the wireless microphone system in complex environments.

  • VHF (Very High Frequency): Ranging from 30 MHz to 300 MHz, VHF is ideal for short-distance transmission in smaller settings. It has strong penetration but is more susceptible to interference from other devices like TV broadcasts and radio signals, especially in crowded environments. Our PTV series, including PTV-1 and PTV-2000, utilizes VHF technology as a budget-friendly option for simple wireless setups. However, based on user feedback and our brand positioning, we have decided to discontinue this series soon, focusing on more advanced wireless solutions.
  • UHF (Ultra High Frequency): With a range of 300 MHz to 3 GHz, UHF offers better resistance to interference and longer transmission distances. It’s perfect for larger applications, such as concerts and conferences, and is commonly used in high-quality wireless microphones. Most of our wireless microphone systems operate on the UHF band, ensuring reliable performance and stable signal transmission across various professional settings.
  • 2.4GHz: Often used in wireless networks and Bluetooth, 2.4GHz offers global compatibility. However, due to heavy usage from devices like Wi-Fi routers and microwaves, it can face interference, impacting transmission stability in crowded environments. We previously offered a 2.4GHz guitar system, but this product has now been discontinued, as we shift focus to more reliable and interference-resistant solutions.
  • 5.8GHz: Like 2.4GHz, 5.8GHz wireless systems are globally compatible. However, unlike 2.4GHz, 5.8GHz offers better bandwidth and less interference, ensuring a more reliable wireless connection. It’s ideal for large systems with multiple microphones but has weaker penetration, making it better suited for line-of-sight environments. We are planning to release new products in this frequency band soon, expanding our offerings for users who need high-quality wireless solutions.

Frequency Band – VHF vs UHF vs 2.4GHz vs 5.8GHz

The way a wireless microphone system selects frequencies is key to ensuring clear audio and avoiding interference. Common frequency selection methods include fixed frequency and selectable frequency. Each has its advantages and is suited to different situations.

  • Fixed Frequency: The system operates on a preset frequency, making it simple to use. However, it can be affected by interference in environments with many devices. This method is ideal for smaller venues with fewer devices. Our PTU-5000 series features a fixed-frequency system, which is also our classic 4-channel system. This easy-to-use setup is a favorite among users for its simplicity.
Phenyx Pro PTU-5000 UHF Fixed Frequency Wireless Microphone System
  • Selectable Frequency: This option provides more flexibility, allowing users to choose frequencies to minimize interference. The system supports two primary methods for synchronizing and selecting frequencies:
  • Frequency Hopping: The system rapidly changes the transmission frequency among many distinct frequencies within a broad frequency range. The transmitter and receiver follow a shared code to control the frequency changes. Simply press the button on the transmitter to select a new frequency, and the receiver will adjust accordingly. This technology provides enhanced flexibility and stability, especially in environments prone to interference.
  • IR Sync: In this method, the transmitter and receiver are paired using infrared signals. By aligning the IR windows of the devices within a short distance (about 2 inches), the system quickly synchronizes.

Selectable frequency systems can also be divided into two types based on how the frequency is selected:

  • Manual Frequency Selection: Users manually select the frequency by pressing a button on the transmitter. This simple method requires user intervention. Our PTU-5200 series and the upcoming 8-channel PTU-4200 allow users to manually select the frequency and then utilize frequency hopping to achieve seamless frequency coordination and optimal performance.
Phenyx Pro PTU-5200 UHF Frequency Hopping Wireless Microphone System
  • Automatic Frequency Selection: The system automatically locates the most stable, interference-free frequency, ideal for large events with multiple devices. This ensures reliable operation with minimal signal disruptions. Our PTU-7000 series, PTU-1U/2U, PTAU-2, and the newly launched PTC-4 all feature Auto Scan functionality, allowing them to automatically search for the best available frequency, as well as manually select frequencies, and pair via infrared synchronization for optimal performance.
Phenyx Pro True Diversity Wireless Microphone System

Circuitry Design - True Diversity or Not

In addition to frequency and band selection, the stability of wireless microphones also heavily relies on the receiver's circuitry design. In complex environments where signal degradation and interference are common, audio dropouts and quality issues can occur. True Diversity technology solves this by utilizing two receivers to simultaneously capture signals from the same transmitter. The system automatically switches to the stronger signal if one weakens due to interference or obstacles.

By continuously selecting the better signal, True Diversity ensures stable audio transmission and minimizes disruptions. This technology enhances reliability, particularly in large or crowded venues, delivering clearer, uninterrupted sound and improving the overall user experience. Both the PTU-1U/2U and PTAU-2 models incorporate this technology, ensuring superior performance and reliability even in demanding environments.

How to Choose the Right Phenyx Pro Wireless Microphone System

Now that you have a better understanding of the technical features of wireless microphones, it’s time to consider your specific needs. First, think about what you will be using the microphone for:

  • Will you be performing live or hosting an event? Will the microphone be used for video recording or large meetings? Do you need multiple microphones to work simultaneously? These questions will help you determine the most suitable wireless microphone system.
