Boundary condenser mic praised for versatility & value. Customers said it "sounds great in kick drum" with solid low-end & clean response. Features flat design, EQ switch, and durable metal build. Some noted it works better for pianos than kick drums, lacking desired high-frequency click. "Great value for the money" with included pouch.

  • Very impressed with this mic! Sounds great in kick drum and the price point is right.
  • ANY place I would use a 91, this will work just as well... I literally cannot tell the difference.
  • Performed outstandingly—delivering tight, focused low-end and clean response without muddying the mix.

This is a fantastic condenser microphone with many uses. It's flat design allows it to function where a mic stand is not practical. You can use it for a bass drum with no problems. Maybe put in inside a piano to get a true pickup of the tones.Even place on a flat surface or table for a conference mic. It is so easy to setup and use. Angling the placement can reduce noise level during use. Considering the features, design and build quality, this provides great value for the money.

Phenyx Pro continues to shine when it comes to delivering affordable, high-quality audio gear. I recently received the PDM-36 bass drum microphone. Although I haven’t had the chance to test it yet, here are my initial impressions:Packaging:Phenyx always packages its products securely and professionally, and the PDM-36 is no exception. The box features images of the full Phenyx drum mic lineup, and inside, the microphone is wrapped snugly in bubble wrap—no chance of damage during shipping. The box also includes a convenient carry pouch, just like you’d expect with any mic purchase. Note that cables and mic clips are not included.Quality:The microphone feels solid and durable with its metal casing and substantial weight. It gives the impression that it could handle a reasonable accidental drop without issue—though best not to test that on purpose!Overall:The PDM-36 appears to be a strong contender for a bass drum microphone and aligns well with the quality and standards Phenyx Pro is known for.

Mic is just as good as any mic of the same build. The switch on it is also great for changing the response. Built sturdy and doesn't run too hot. Easy to tune into the proper frequency range. Solid mic for the price and as a small added bonus it comes with a mic pouch. Would recommend 10 / 10. Might purchase another to have on hand since the price is Soo reasonable.

Love this mic. No pre-amp necessary. Was comparing with others to integrate into the studio environment. The sound signature is very solid, and includes a wide range in the EQ, not just a low end. The sound is not muffled at all, but nice a clean, and it certainly lives up to the advertising when they say "kick". Yep, really nice pickup and wide range. I ended up using the "flat" response in the toggle to get the wider range of frequency, as advertised, but then used my channel on the board to EQ it the way I like for that particular drum. Still has plenty of "kick" in that mode, but with more upper range options. In my pic I'm just showing what it looks like, but that's not where I placed it. I have it actually behind the drum, agains the wall.Great mic. Will be getting another one of these! (sound studio approved, and I'm betting it will also be a great stage mic when called upon). In general, I am liking most of the Phenyx Pro equipment I've gotten so far.

If you are looking for a good "Kick In" mic, don't get this one. I bought it to try it out, and tested it at multiple theatres and venues, in kits played by professional musicians. It's all 2khz and none of that 5-6khz click you want from a boundary condenser. The mids you would normally scoop seem to be boosted. That being said, it's a sturdy little mic, looks great, and works just fine to mic grand pianos.

Big Homely Guy

I wanted to hate this. I really really did. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Phenyx Pro microphones. I have 16 of their wireless mics and 4 of their newly released wired mics. I own their Antenna distribution system... I have a Phenyx 4 U road case for wireless mics... I have a TON of their gear, and it all performs flawlessly, and I use it A LOT!But I also own THREE D112s and FOUR D6s and TWO 91s, as well as a slew of other random kick mics, all of which cost a LOT more than this new mic from Phenyx Pro, and doggone it... ANY place I would use a 91, this will work just as well... I don't even have to change EQ settings. I literally cannot tell the difference.SO, I'm going to uss these mics on a LOT of shows. I have nothing bad to say about it, and honestly, I'll still use the 'real' kick mics on important shows with riders that need to be filled with specific mics, otherwise I'll just use this.I'm blown away.

**“We tested the Phenyx Pro PDM36 as a kick drum mic and as a floor mic for a cajón. It performed outstandingly in both roles—delivering tight, focused low-end and clean response without muddying the mix.The supercardioid pattern helped isolate the source, even in a live setting, and the EQ switch gave us flexibility between punch and balance. For worship and rehearsal use, it’s a reliable, versatile mic that punches above its price point.”**

Happy Family

I own and use MANY mics, D6, D112, Beta 52A, ND68, PR48.I can make any of those mics sound good on any kick drum with a little work.Phenyx Pro has been a consistently "good" company with affordable knockoffs that are good quality.I expected this mic to be OKAY.I literally threw this mic in a kick drum (with a pillow inside) and with almost no added EQ or compression, it sound really good. A totally usable sound. If I was doing a small club gig and it sounded like that out of the box, I'd be super happy with it.It has an XLR right on the mic, so it's SUPER easy to just plug in and go.The biggest issue I have is the instructions and the switch on the bottom. There is an EQ switch on the bottom that has two settings. One is specifically EQ'd for Kick, and the other for other things which I assume is flatter. I haven't measured it but my intelligent guess is that the EQ switch just takes some low bump out, but that's where I start having issue. The instructions show two curves, one flat and one sort of "smiley" which you would assume would be the kick setting, but the instructions state reversed from that. But to make matters worse, the switch on the bottom is not labeled at all except for a flat line and a flat line with a LF dip. Which is the kick setting? If you created an EQ specifically for Kick, why not put the ACTUAL label "kick" on the EQ switch and not make me guess and then read your probably wrongly written instruction manual? So, the mic gets 5 stars, but the manual sucks, mentions all the other mics they make for drums and doesn't even have a picture or diagram of this mic in it. So the manual gets 2 stars, but I won't de-rate the mic here.Buy it, for the price it's really amazingly good. You won't be disappointed.
